VRtual Ed: A Virtual Three-Dimensional Educational Platform for Healthcare Students

Summary:

Virtual Reality (VR) provides a simulated environment, designed to resemble the real world. The user experiences VR by visualizing contents displayed on head mounted displays (such as Oculus, HTC Vive, etc.) or hand-held phones with fixtures (for wearing). The user can also interact with the contents of VR with controllers (like a gaming joystick) that comes along with the head mounted display. A β€œVR application” is an executable program, which when played/executed inside the head mounted display, provides the user the desired content that mimics the real world.

The purpose of this study is as follows: i) To  produce an immersive three-dimensional (3D) virtual clinical experience with interactive human-like digital avatars powered by artificial intelligence that nursing students can use to obtain critical foundational communication, physical assessment, and technical skills they need to become safe, competent nurses, ii) to understand the efficacy of such a VR Nursing Simulator software as an educational tool, iii) to validate the realism, useability, and educational content of the VR Nursing Simulator. The proposed research will provide insight on the usefulness of such VR software for medical education.
